The History of this program began in 1964 when our founder, playing out of a guitar case and a few piano bars in Georgetown near Washington, D.C.,  stumbled upon a small meeting place called Singers Studio. It was run by a then aging but gifted man, passionate about the performing arts and heavily focused on singers and their public performance training.

The underground facility held about 20-30 people and the minute you walked in you were busy. Even if you just walked off the street to listen to the performers, he made sure you were an active part of the undertakings immediately. He would ask your name and what do you do! If you said you were a poet, he said great sit right there. A singer?, no problem sit right there! Oh you play the piano! great we have one right here and ready for you.

Then in a magical sort of way about him, the poet would read his lyrics as instructed, the pianist, with some guidance, would create an improv piece,  the singer would hum along until she was comfortable and then she would sing the poets work. The room was always filled with excitement, for these were the greatest and most creative times that one would never forget. We became better overall performers, not just mechanical graduates. It was clear this was high value education.

Our new Performers Studio takes that initial vision, adds the backroom mentoring and guidance of Amercian Idol, then combines it with lectures, motivational guests, and education as found on Inside the Actors Studio to form a complete immersion program building performers like no other.
